Happy Friday ATX! 🤠 Edition #52

Check out the best things to do in Austin this weekend and more! šŸŽ¶šŸŒ†šŸ„¶

Happy Friday ATX! 🤠 It’s National Houseplant Appreciation Day! I write this to you surrounded by houseplants, and know my space would feel incredibly bland without them. If you don’t have any maybe this is your sign to get some! 🌱🪓🌵

Tomorrow marks one year since I started this business.

52 weeks later.

52 newsletters later.

I’m not sure I have ever been as consistent with anything else in my life as I have been with this publication.

I love writing it every week. I love the fact that you all read it. I hope it brings some spice to your life and encourages you to get out of the house on the weekends. This is just the beginning.

At some point in the next few months we will throw our first Happy Friday ATX Party, and I promise it will be an absolute rager.

Whatever your reason is for being here and reading this, thank you. You’re awesome.

And with that… here’s your meme for this week!

true…

Weekend Forecast: The cold weather continues through the weekend with a low of 30 degrees and a high of 58 on Sunday as things ā€œwarmā€ back up just a tad. It seems like things are getting back to normal after a slow past few weekends following the holidays because there are some awesome happenings this weekend, including a ton of really great comedy shows. šŸŽ¶šŸŽšŸ„¶

Best thing we ate this week… I went to see a friends band (Louisiana Surf Departmentthey’re super groovy) play on Saturday night and while I was on the East Side I got some Spicy Boys chicken. I ordered the nugs and the tots, both with Sichuan tingly spice and Sichuan ranch. NGL I was shocked how full the box with chicken nuggets was, it was a $10 order of chicken nuggets but it was absolutely packed to the brim. I swear it was as if I ordered a 20 piece at Chick Fil A.

This was actually my first time having spicy boys, and I dug the flavor profile. Think fried chicken meets Asian spices, it was delicious. The chicken was crispy, the tots were some of the best tots I have had, and the Sichuan spice has a weird way of being spicy but also numbing your lips and mouth. It makes for a pretty interesting culinary experience that I would definitely go back for.

I couldn’t finish the amount of food they gave me, so I shared it with some buddies who for what it’s worth, thought it was too spicy even though it’s only the middle spice level out of the 3 they offered. I have a pretty high spice tolerance and didn’t really think it was spicy at all, but I mean… the name of the place is literally Spicy Boys.

They have 4 locations around town, 1 South, 2 East, and 1 North so if you get the craving for some spicy chicken, you probably aren’t too far from one.

Most fun we had this week… If you’re still sleeping on the comedy scene in Austin, I don’t know what to tell you. The biggest names in comedy are performing here on a weekly basis, but also tons of super talented people that are on the come up are grinding and hustling and putting on hilarious shows around town.

This week I went to check out a friend of mine, Eleazar Guzman’s show at Cheers Shot Bar on Wednesday night and I didn’t know any of the comics on the lineup besides Eleazar and his buddy Matt Sturns, but I left with my cheeks hurting from laughing so hard.

Normally this show happens on the rooftop there but because it was in the 30s outside they moved the show inside and it was close-quarters-comedy. There was a lot of crowd work, some hilarious comedians, some absolutely unhinged comedians, and tons of laughs. Eleazar is doing some awesome things in the Austin scene, recently appeared on Kill Tony and crushed it, and has another show he puts on Sunday nights at Gnarbar.

This week the Sunday show will have a super secret special guest, let’s just say it’s Kevin Hart. (Disclaimer: It’s not KH but you may get the reference if you like this guy)

Say less.

The renowned late night Austin brasserie is opening a daytime concept in collaboration with The Blanton Museum (The best art Museum in Austin with mind-blowing pieces from some of the best artists in history) and I am certain it’s going to be an epic spot. It could be open as soon as Spring, so follow their instagram to stay in the loop!

This place feels like a little slice of Tulum in the heart of Austin. Designed by Davey McEathron, it’s all about clean lines, a cool steel zig-zag wall, and tons of natural light pouring in from massive windows. The kitchen’s set up for serious cooking (or just looking fancy) with Thermador appliances and a workstation sink. With 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and 2 living spaces, there’s room for just about anything. Outside, you’ve got a heated plunge pool under a giant Spanish Oak. It’s laid-back, stylish, and perfectly Austin.
