Weekend Forecast: We finally get 4th of July on a Friday! It’s a weekend full of insane events, huge parties, concerts, raves, etc, the only catch is that as I write this, it is pouring rain. We’ll see what the weather looks like going into the afternoon and evening, and see what still goes on as planned, but I have a feeling it should still be an epic weekend either way. 🎆
Best thing we ate this week… We finally tried Song La, a Taiwanese food truck that lives in The Thicket food trailer park down off of South 1st street! Had the Chicken Bento Box which had fried chicken bites, rice, and 2 vegetable sides (zucchini and cabbage when we went, both incredible!) The star of the show was the chicken bites, though. The dark meat bites were perfectly marinated and so juicy yet still crispy on the outside, dusted with spices and served with 2 house-made sauces. We paid $14 and some change for each Bento Box, and they were HUGE portions. However, it did start pouring down rain while we were waiting for our food, and The Thicket has very little to no coverage for rain, so plan to go when the weather is good or grab it to go if weather is looking spotty.

Most fun we had this week… One of the best parts of my week was starting Friday with Habitat Retreat’s Summer Series, a morning yoga flow at Zilker followed by a dip in Barton Springs. It was the perfect way to begin the day: movement, presence, and community vibes all before the city woke up. There were plenty of people, but the energy was calm and peaceful before the downtown rush and weekend crowds.
Practicing under the open sky with the Austin skyline in view felt like a collective deep breath. Everyone was showing up and getting after it, bright and early. What a great way to kick off the weekend. The series is free to join, with local refreshments after class, and you can sign up through PIE. If you’ve been craving a grounded and energizing start to your weekend, this is it.
Habitat Retreats Summer Series
New Business that we want to try… Shipwreck’d Pirate Bar just opened up in The Eleanor, which is the event space attached to The Roosevelt Room. It’s a pirate-themed bar that will have a top-tier cocktail program, an assumption I can make confidently based on its association with RR. It looks like it’s got all the pirate themed bells and whistles one would expect, and they even give you a discount for showing up in a full pirate outfit! We will report back soon! 🫡🏴☠️🦜
